Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea Tree essential oil
INCI: Melaleuca alternifolia.
Oil obtained from steam distillation of twigs and leaves. Origin: Australia.
Tea Tree has a long history of use by the Australian aboriginal peoples who use the leaves to make a herbal tea. The essential oil has become renowned for its broad-spectrum antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. It acts both directly on infectious micro-organisma and indirectly by stimulating the human immune system.
It is ideal in skincare preparations, added to a base cream or base oil for the treatment of athlete's foot, acne, boils, abscesses, cold sores, herpes, warts, infected wounds and insect bites.
It can also be added to cocoa butter-based suppositories for the treatment of vaginal infections, and can be useful in an aromaburner for upper respiratory tract infections and inflammations, flu and chicken pox.
Tea Tree essential oil can also be added to base shampoo, handmade soaps, toothpastes and deodorants.
Tea Tree is non-toxic, non-phototoxic and non-irritating. Due to its limonene content it is possible that in excessive quantities it could cause irritation to people with sensitive skin. It also has a strong fresh, spicy-camphoraceous odour. If you have sensitive skin or prefer an essential oil with similar properties but with a softer scent we recommend Manuka essential oil as a good alternative.
Caution: Possible sensitization in some individuals. We recommend a patch test (dilute the essential oil in a cream or carrier oil first) before using any new skincare preparation. As with virtually all essential oils it should not be used neat on the skin nor be taken internally!
