Most methods of extracting wellness-giving components from raw plant material leave a residue of the extracting medium. Some extracting fluids, such as hot water, for example, used to prepare tissanes or herbal teas, and alcohol used to prepare herbal tinctures are relatively harmless, or even beneficial, within the end product. But some other extracting fluids can be toxic to the body or to the environment, which means that the product has to be further refined with relatively less toxic solvents to eliminate residue of the extracting fluid, adding to the cost (and environmental impact) while reducing the health-giving values of the original gifts of the plants.

In carbon dioxide (CO2) extracts, however, no trace remains of the supercritical CO2 fluid used to extract the bioactive constituents from the plant material. Another advantage of this process is that high heat, which tends to denature valuable but sensitive components of the plant, is not required. The result is a pure, highly concentrated preparation, close to the natural state of the original raw material. So CO2 extraction is becoming increasingly popular. It eliminates the need for further refining of the product and also avoids the need to spend energy and money on preventing environmental pollution. For us CO2 plant extracts represent a 'green choice'.

Further, unlike some other media of extraction, including water and alcohol, this process gently extracts both volatile components, such as essential oils, as well as heavier, fatty components. It is the latter which are of particular value to the health of our skin.

Because of the highly concentrated nature of our C02 plant extracts, it is not necessary to use more than 5% extract in your creams, lotions, ointments, body oils etc. Being of a waxy consistency they dissolve easily into the base product under low heat.

We recommend CO2 extracts for use in products for external use only, and should never be used undiluted on the skin.
