Ravensara essential oil

Oil from steam distillation of the leaves.
Origin: Madagascar.

Ravensara has a slightly spicy, camphoraceous, woody-herbaceous scent. It has a strong affinity to the human respiratory system and lends strong support to this system during infections such as colds, flu, sinusitis, catarrh and bronchitis.

It is also acts as a general tonic, easing fatigue, congestion and muscular aches and pains. It works well when a few drops are added to a steam inhaler, vaporiser, aromaburner or ointment, and is suitable to use for children.

Its combined anti-viral and analgesic properties make it a good choice in the treatment of outbreaks of shingles (Herpes zoster), in which case it can be added to St. John's Wort oil.
In its native Madagascar the seeds of Ravensara (known as Madagacan nutmeg) are used in cooking as well as in medicine.

Caution: Possible sensitization in some individuals. We recommend a patch test (dilute the essential oil in a cream or carrier oil first) before using any new skincare preparation. As with virtually all essential oils it should not be used neat on the skin nor be taken internally!
