A long record of use in traditional herbal medicine, including use by Hippocrates, as a lymphatic cleanser and a muscle relaxant with diuretic and expectorant effects. Helps with skin complaints such as some cases of eczema and psoriasis. It has been found useful in some cases of breast and ovarian cancer.

Red clover is an important livestock fodder in northern Europe. It contains phyto-oestrogens which have become popular due to their potential to compensate for diminishing oestrogen levels during menopause and help protect against bone erosion. But, unlike some other plants containing phyto-oestrogens, it is not clear whether Red Clover contains sufficient quantity or metabolic availability for this purpose.
