Description

Sacha inchi oil, cold-pressed, organic

Sacha inchi oil cold-pressed organic, is ideal for dry skin and scalp conditions and atopic skin. Light and quickly absorbed.

This is a pure and natural oil cold-pressed from the seeds of organically cultivated Plukenetia volubulis, a perennial vine native to the rain forests of Central and South America.

Sacha inchi oil is a relative newcomer to the western cosmetics industry, but the plant has been harvested in its native lands for over 3000 years as an important food and medicinal source. It is now central to environmental and food projects in the Amazon to provide economic sustainability to indigenous populations. It is now also being cultivated in south east Asia and other parts of the world. Our Sacha inchi oil comes from organic cultivation in Peru.

The raw seeds of the plant have been found to contain high levels of essential amino acids, similar to that of soya. The cold-pressed oil that we use for skin, scalp, hair and beard is one of the richest sources of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega 3 linolenic and omega 6 linoleic acids, comparable to linseed and safflower. Further, the oil contains an abundance of alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) and also carotenoids some of which are converted to vitamin A (retinol) in our body.

Benefits for hair, beard and skin

Sacha inchi oil has excellent emollient properties. It moisturises your hair and skin and helps prevent water loss, especially from irritated and itchy skin, such as occurs in dry eczema, psoriasis, acne, dandruff, atopic reactions and other conditions characterised by dryness or sebum imbalance. It has a comedogenic rating of 0 to 1, which means it does not block the pores of the skin.

The two major oil constituents alpha-linolenic and linoleic acids are also important components of the cell membranes of the epidermis of skin and scalp. These help replenish the cells and slow down or soften the wrinkles and fine lines of ageing. They also help the skin repair from inflammation and wounds.

The relatively high levels of vitamin E in Sacha inchi oil also helps brittle hair regenerate while its hydrating, softening properties help protect the hair shaft from further damage. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that helps counteract free radical damage to the skin by airborne pollutants.

We have also found Sacha inchi oil to be very soothing when applied to the skin after shaving or exfoliating.

The cold-pressed oil is light and quickly absorbed by the skin and has a mild nutty aroma.

Packaging and how to use

Supplied in 100ml amber glass bottles or 250ml or 1 litre PET bottles. Also available in 5kg and 25kg HDPE jerry cans.

Use pure:
This oil is light and easily absorbed without blocking the pores of the skin and without leaving a sticky feeling. This means it can be used pure for facial massage (especially useful for dry, mature skin) and for applying to an irritated scalp or irritated parts of the skin affected by dry eczema, psoriasis and other dry conditions.

Use as a cosmetic ingredient: Sacha inchi oil can be blended with heavier oils and butters such as castor oil or shea butter to lighten the end product such as a balm, salve or serum. It is not water soluble nor heat stable so for incorporation into cream or lotion recipes we recommend adding it to the emulsion in phase 3 (below 40°C).

Use in food: We seek this oil for skincare use. However, this oil is in principle suitable for food use when used cold such as a salad dressing. It is not suitable for cooking as heating will quickly destroy its nutrients.
