Echinacea has a fascinating history having found its way into European herbal medicine via the medicine traditions of north-eastern Native Americans. This powerful yet gentle herb is most well-known for its effects on regulating the immune system when taken internally (see our Echinacea tincture and Echinacea dried herb for more information).

Externally, Echinacea has wonderful healing effects on the skin, and we believe that the aromatic water provides a superior method of application for skin problems compared to the tincture or infusion. Unlike the tincture, it is free from the drying effects of ethanol and, unlike the infused dried herb, contains both the volatile and the water soluble constituents, due to the slow, gentle process of distillation. Further, this water is prepared from both the root and the stem, leaves and flowers, thus combining the unique constituents of every part of the plant.

Echinacea aromatic water calms inflammation (and so is useful for 'hot' skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis) and stimulates new tissue growth for wound and ulcer healing. This special water also provides another benefit of Echinacea – a combined antiseptic and deodorant effect, useful for infected and slow-healing ulcers. It may also alleviate itchy conditions, such as urticaria.

Although it can be used neat on the skin, we recommend incorporating it into a base cream to ensure prolonged contact with the skin and so maximum healing benefits.
