The mint family of plants are among the oldest to be used by humans, particularly in the East. They have a variety of therapeutic effects, including carminative (relieving nausea, indigestion, dyspepsia, flatulence and colic) and anti-infective. They have a particular affinity for the digestive and respiratory systems, and also have some analgesic effects, particularly for nerve and muscle pain, toothache and some forms of headache.
Added to skincare preparations such as a base cream, Peppermint essential oil brings a fresh, cooling effect and so finds a use in natural balms and aftershaves and after-waxing gels or lotions, as well as in toothpaste.
Its anti-infective property is of value in treatments for ringworm, scabies and acne, especially as it also reduces itching. Its anti-itching property may also be useful for itchy scalp when added to a base shampoo or base hair conditioner.
It can be added to a base massage oil for relief of aching muscles, and to an aromburner for relief from colds and nasal and sinus congestion.
Peppermint is non-irritant, providing is taken not to use too much in products (we recommend less than 1%), This is due to the menthol content.
Caution: Possible sensitization in some individuals. We recommend a patch test (dilute the essential oil in a cream or carrier oil first) before using any new skincare preparation. As with virtually all essential oils it should not be used neat on the skin nor be taken internally!
