It's easy and fun to make your own fantastic, natural pot pourri using our dried herbs flowers and seeds, orris root fixative and essential oils or natural perfumes. All our ingredients are free from synthetic dyes and are 100% plant products. There is so much creative scope because of all the possible combinations. Below is a basic recipe, followed by a list of dried plants and essential oils that make great pot pourri.
You can also place your pot pourri mixture in porous bags, such as cotton or muslin bags, to go in your wardrobe, lingerie drawer or linen cupboard. For sheer luxury you can even use silk, satin or lace for your bags.
Do keep pot pourri out of reach of young children and pets as the scent and colour can make them want to taste it!
If you are not familiar with using essential oils we recommend that you first read our Essential Oils - Important Safety Points.
Basic Recipe:
3 cups dried Red Rose Petals or dried Jasmine flowers
2 cups dried Pink Rose Buds
2 cups dried Lavender
2 tablespoons powdered Orris root (the 'fixative')
15 drops essential oil, absolute or natural fragrance of your choice, e.g. Rose absolute or Rose natural perfume
Gently and carefully mix all the ingredients together in a large glass or metal bowl. Use a wooden spoon or similar to prevent you getting the essential oil on your hands. Take care not to break the delicate structure of the flowers, petals or buds. Place the mixture in a strong paper bag and seal the bag with clips or pegs. Turn the bag a few times to distribute the fixative evenly. Now put the bag in a dark place and allow the mixture to 'season' for 4 to 6 weeks. Give the bag a gentle shake now and again during this period.
After this period transfer your pot pourri to attractive containers and place in warm areas around your home. When the scent eventually begins to fade simply add a few more drops of essential oil.
